Teaching a yoga class as a certified instructor can be both joyful and a little stressful too. Here are some suggestions so you can give an effective and awesome class and an amazing experience to your students.
Cleanliness
It’s always refreshing to take a shower before coming to class as it invigorates you and provides a foundation for your practice.
Choose attire that allows for movement while also respecting the environment of the class. Tying up hair neatly helps avoid distractions and remember to keep your nails trimmed and clean for safety and hygiene.
Staying hydrated nourishes your body. Also contributes to fresh breath creating a positive and comfortable atmosphere in our class. Your commitment to these practices assists in building an environment for everyone.
Starting the session
Creating a relaxing atmosphere at the beginning of a yoga class is important. Make sure you have enough rest so that you’re alert and energized.
Arriving 15 minutes early will allow you to set up a clean, well lit and well ventilated space for practice.
It’s also important to familiarize yourself with your students. Take the time to inquire about any injuries or limitations they may have as this demonstrates your concern, for their well being.
Set aside a designated area for their belongings to ensure an organized classroom environment. Kindly remind everyone to turn off their phones so that everyone can have an experience.
Classroom management
Classroom management plays a role in creating a harmonious yoga class. Position yourself in such a way that all students can easily see you providing guidance throughout the session.
Simultaneously make an effort to personally connect with each student by moving during the class offering assistance and alignment cues as needed.
Nurture relationships with your students based on respect and support. These practices cultivate an environment where individuals feel comfortable and confident in exploring their yoga practice.
Prepare Your Lesson Plan; Take time to plan your class in advance. Determine which yoga poses (asanas) you will include and the sequence you will follow. Consider incorporating a theme or focus into your class.
Start with Centering Practice; Begin your session with a centering practice such as breathing or meditation. To establish the tone of the session consider incorporating an opening “OM” chant at the start as, at the end of the class.
Here are some guidelines, for effective yoga teaching;
- Use easy and concise language to explain each pose including its name, how to get into it and any important alignment cues. Visual and tactile cues can also be helpful in ensuring students understand the posture.
- Demonstrate the poses yourself. Consider using mirrors if available. This way students can visually grasp the alignment and form.
- Recognize that your students have levels of experience and flexibility. Offer modifications for poses to accommodate abilities and ensure everyone feels included.
- Emphasize the importance of breathing with movement. Guide students in matching their breath to their movements to enhance mindfulness during practice.
- Prioritize safety by reminding your students to practice within their limits and avoid overexertion. Encourage them to listen to their bodies being mindful of any injuries or limitations they may have.
- Provide variations for poses allowing students the opportunity to progress at their own pace while still offering options suitable for all levels.
- Plan a sequence that includes warm up exercises gradually building intensity throughout the class and ending with cool down poses for relaxation.
- Always conclude your class with Savasana ( relaxation). This allows students time to fully relax their bodies and minds after the practice..
These guidelines promote a positive and supportive approach to teaching and practicing yoga, emphasizing empathy, respect, and individual growth. By following these guidelines you can create a yoga experience that caters to needs while maintaining a safe environment.
Here are some tips, on how to guide students into a state of relaxation and help them release any tension;
- Hands On Adjustments; If you feel comfortable and your students are open to it consider offering invasive hands on adjustments to assist with proper alignment.
- Incorporate Mindfulness and Meditation; Introduce mindfulness and meditation practices during your class even if its just for a period of time. This will help students connect with their selves.
- Music and Props; If you decide to use music make sure it complements the atmosphere of the class. Additionally provide yoga props such as blocks, straps or bolsters. Teach your students how to utilize them.
- Stay Present; Stay fully focused on the class and pay attention to your students’ needs. Offer words of encouragement while remaining attentive throughout the session.
- Prioritize Self Care; As a teacher prioritize your well being by practicing self care techniques that prevent burnout.
