Chakras are the energy centers of yogic philosophy. This teaching follows the four lower chakras as one continuous movement: from survival, to pleasure, to personal power, and finally to love and freedom.
What is a Chakra? Beyond the Literal Translation
When we enter the study of chakras, the first thing we must understand is their true meaning and location. In the West, chakra is commonly translated into English simply as a “wheel.” While this is technically correct on a basic level, it fails to give the true, living understanding of what yogis are pointing toward.
In traditional yogic understanding, anything that is round, moving, and generating energy is a chakra.
This definition exists on multiple dimensions:
- The Physical Level: The wheel of a car turns, moves, and creates momentum. The potter’s wheel turns, shapes clay, and generates energy. Both are physical chakras.
- The Universal Level: Look at our Earth. It is round, moving in orbit, and generating immense life energy. Look at the planets. Every celestial body is round, spinning, and producing force. They are cosmic chakras.
- The Subatomic Level: Dive into the subtlest dimension: atoms. What is an atom? Round, constantly in motion, and generating energy. Every single atom is a chakra. Under the lens of modern physics, our entire existence is a dance of atoms. At this atomic level, there is no separation between you, me, and the universe. There is an inherent oneness. Life, seen this way, is a profound energetic mystery.
Within the human system, energy points are vast. Acupuncture maps 365 primary points (some traditions speak of over 700). Each is essentially an energy vortex, a mini-chakra, corresponding with the body’s 72,000 nadis (energy pathways). But for a yogi seeking practical transformation and healing, working individually with hundreds of points is overwhelming. Instead, the yogic system concentrates on seven main chakras.
These seven chakras are the great main rivers of our energy body. If the flow of these rivers is understood, balanced, and channeled, our entire being flourishes with health, clarity, and vitality.
The Cyclical Wheel: Samsara and Emotional Patterns
The Buddha spoke of Samsara, the great cyclical wheel of life. A human being is born, moves through infancy to youth, steps into old age, dissolves, and the wheel turns again.
Within a single lifetime, this wheel turns relentlessly through our emotions:
- An emotion arises (such as anger or fear).
- We react and suffer.
- Guilt follows.
- We attempt to forgive or justify ourselves.
- The moment passes, only for another trigger to appear and repeat the exact same emotional loop.
Every habitual emotion moves in a circle. It is a chakra in itself. True meditation and enlightenment are about waking up to these cycles and stepping out of the repetitive loop of suffering.
The Four Lower Chakras at a Glance
Before we climb the building floor by floor, here is the whole map.
| Chakra | Sanskrit meaning | Life theme | Main blockage | The way through |
| Muladhara (Root) | Mula means root, Adhara means base | Food, sleep, reproductive and sexual energy, survival | Fear | Accept, Watch, Relax, No Judgment |
| Svadhisthana (Sacral) | Taste, and one’s own place | Pleasure, sensuality, creative vitality | Guilt and shame | Conscious enjoyment, without harm to others |
| Manipura (Solar Plexus) | City of Jewels | Ego, power, willpower | Suppression of emotion | Catharsis through movement, release, and breath |
| Anahata (Heart) | The unstruck sound | Love and freedom | Doubt | Gratitude, saying YES |
The Foundation: Muladhara (The Root Chakra)
To understand human consciousness, imagine the human body as a seven-story building.
Before you construct the upper levels, what is the single most critical element? The foundation. If the foundation is compromised or misaligned, the entire structure eventually collapses. The first center, Muladhara, is our base foundation (Mula means root; Adhara means base).
[ Level 4: Heart (Love & Freedom) ]
[ Level 3: Solar Plexus (Willpower & Catharsis) ]
[ Level 2: Sacral (Pleasure & Creativity) ]

[ Level 1: MULADHARA (Root / Foundation) ]
On the physical and biological level, the root chakra governs the three absolute pillars of human and animal survival:
- Food: How we nourish the body. If you go to chakra healing sessions but do not change your food habits, nothing real can happen.
- Sleep: How the body resets and rests. If your sleep is disturbed or improper, the first chakra cannot be healthy, and all subsequent centers become disturbed.
- Reproductive and Sexual Energy: How life continues. This is the biological survival of the species. As we explored in our teachings on Brahmacharya, the yogic teaching on how this energy is handled, sexual energy is a foundational life force. How you share, direct, and handle this vital energy can either build you up into profound strength or completely deplete and destroy you.
These three things, food, sleep, and sex, are shared equally between animals and human beings. At the level of the first chakra, both humans and animals are running on raw survival and security instincts:
- Animals eat purely to eliminate hunger and survive.
- Animals sleep anywhere, regardless of comfort, out of sheer physical fatigue.
- Animals engage in the sexual act purely as an unconscious reproductive urge: enter, release, produce offspring, and it is finished.
When human beings exist purely in survival mode, their sexual energy remains stuck at this animalistic, unconscious level. It is rushed, driven only by primal urges, and disconnected from awareness. If your mind is consumed by survival and insecurity, you remain anchored in the first chakra.
The Blockage: Fear
The primary poison that locks the first chakra is fear. However, yogic philosophy distinguishes between two types of fear:
- Physical Fear: A healthy, natural, and biological response designed to keep the physical body safe from immediate, real danger.
- Psychological Fear: An unnatural, mind-fabricated state. This mental fear is what causes the deepest disturbances, keeping you perpetually anxious, restless, and completely unable to enjoy the present moment.
The Healing Formula
When fear arises, you do not need to fight it. Fighting creates more tension. Instead, apply the yogic remedy:
- Accept: Acknowledge the fear as it is.
- Watch: Observe it neutrally without getting pulled into the story.
- Relax: Let your breath and body soften.
- No Judgment: Stop labeling the feeling as good or bad.
Through understanding, light enters the darkness of fear, and the root naturally stabilizes.
The Awakening of Humanity: Svadhisthana (The Sacral Chakra)
The second center is Svadhisthana. In Sanskrit, the word carries two rich meanings: Swad means taste, and Sva means you, your own place.
Svadhisthana is the realm of pleasure, sensuality, and creative vitality. It is precisely at this center where human consciousness begins to separate from animal consciousness.
Consider how the three foundational energies of the first chakra (food, sleep, and sexual energy) are transformed once they rise into the second chakra:
| Realm | 1st Chakra (Animal / Survival Mode) | 2nd Chakra (Human / Awakened Pleasure) |
| Food | Unconscious feeding just to end hunger. | Candlelight dinner, beautiful atmosphere, fine cooking, joyful conversation, savoring taste. |
| Sleep | Collapsing anywhere out of sheer fatigue. | Beautiful bedsheets, comfortable pillows, dim lighting, incense, soft music. Sleep as an art form. |
| Sexual Energy | Pure biological reproduction, instinctual release, rushed finish. | Sacred intimacy, love, laughter, dance, deep relaxation, mutual respect, and meditation. |
The act itself may look the same on the surface, but the consciousness behind it completely alters the energy. When you bring conscious pleasure, beauty, and relaxation to eating, sleeping, and relating, you are actively healing both your first and second chakras.
The True Science of Tantra
Many people in the West, and increasingly in the East, falsely believe that Tantra is solely about sex. That is completely incorrect.
In the ancient text Vigyan Bhairav Tantra, there are 112 meditation techniques. Out of these, 110 meditations are about everyday life: walking, talking, eating, looking at a loved one, imagining, and resting. Only two meditations deal with sexual energy and intimacy with a partner.
Yet the modern world ignored the 110 meditations on life and fixated entirely on the two! Tantra teaches that when you are with your partner, it should not be an animalistic, rushed act. Check your breath. Relax with the breath. Introduce laughter, jokes, dance, deep appreciation, and gratitude. Honor the divinity in the other person. Treat the union as a meditation, not a hit-and-run show. When intimacy is approached with reverence and self-presence, it heals the second chakra and frees creative energy.
The Blockage: Guilt and Shame
The poison that paralyzes the second chakra is guilt and shame.
Throughout history, politicians and dogmatic religious structures have maintained control over humanity by instilling guilt. If you can make human beings feel guilty about natural bodily pleasures, intimacy, and joyful living, they become weak, self-pitying, and easily dominated. A person bound by guilt cannot grow. They remain locked in survival mode.
As long as your pleasure is rooted in the first principle of yoga, Ahimsa (non-violence), meaning you are not harming or violating anyone, you have every right to enjoy your life. True pleasure is a healing dimension that liberates you from guilt.
The City of Jewels: Manipura (The Solar Plexus)
Moving upward, we arrive at the third center: Manipura. In Sanskrit, Mani means a precious jewel or diamond, and Pura means a city. Manipura is the City of Jewels, the radiant seat of personal power, ego, and willpower.
As a child grows past the age of two or three, they discover a distinct sense of self: “My name is… I am this… This is mine.” The ego is born.
In traditional yoga, the ego is never condemned as evil. Other systems might preach the destruction of the ego, but a yogi understands that the ego is a necessary psychological vehicle. The problem is not the instrument itself. The problem is that we do not yet know how to master it.
When aligned, Manipura provides the dynamic fire to create, take decisive action, establish healthy boundaries, and transform life. When imbalanced, it degrades into arrogance, manipulation, domination, and political power games.
Emotional Energy and Catharsis
Manipura is intimately tied to the digestive fire and the belly, the energetic hub where raw emotions live. When you feel anxious, you feel butterflies in your stomach. When you feel rage, tension tightens around your solar plexus.
Western psychotherapy often focuses heavily on this third center. Thinkers like Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, and Alfred Adler explored these dynamics deeply:
- Adler spoke directly of the inferiority and superiority complexes: the constant power game of either trying to dominate others or feeling crushed by them.
When people exist purely in an imbalanced Manipura, even love becomes transactional: “I will love you only if you follow my terms and satisfy my expectations.” This is an ego-contract, not spiritual devotion.
The Poison: Suppression
The greatest affliction of the third chakra is the suppression of emotion.
From childhood, society teaches us to swallow our anger, hide our grief, and stifle our tears. But suppressed energy never vanishes. In yogic understanding, it retreats into the physical tissues and can show up as digestive troubles, tension in the shoulders and hips, chronic tightness, and psychosomatic illness.
True healing requires creative catharsis:
- Physical Movement: Asanas (yoga postures) are designed to release what is stored in the body. Deep hip openers, spinal twists, and core-strengthening postures squeeze out stale emotional tension.
- Somatic Release: Dynamic methods, such as boxing, active running, conscious primal screaming, or progressive muscle relaxation (tensing the entire body for 5 to 7 seconds and consciously releasing), discharge latent rage safely without directing hostility at other human beings.
- Conscious Breath: Pranayama (breathing practices) like Bhastrika are used to clear the energetic blockages stored within the belly.
The Unstruck Sound: Anahata (The Heart Chakra)
Ascending past the transactional dynamics of the lower three chakras brings us to the sacred fourth center: Anahata.
In Sanskrit, Ahat refers to a sound created by two physical objects striking together, a sound born of impact and friction. Anahata translates to the unstruck sound: the pure vibration that exists on its own, without collision, friction, or duality.
In Zen, seekers are given the famous riddle: “What is the sound of one hand clapping?” That unstruck essence is the exact nature of the heart.
Third Chakra Love: Transactional –> “I give to you, so you must give to me.”
Fourth Chakra Love: Unconditional –> “I love because my being is overflowing with love.”
In worldly relationships governed by the third chakra, two people often approach each other like beggars, each holding out an empty bowl pleading, “Love me, validate me, fulfill me.” Because both are empty, conflict and disappointment inevitably follow.
Fourth-chakra love begins with self-love and inner stillness. When you sit in meditation and cultivate quietude, your internal glass begins to fill. Drop by drop, peace accumulates until the glass inevitably overflows. When love overflows, you no longer demand affection or control from your partner. Love ceases to be an obligation and becomes an intrinsic quality of your being.
Love as Air: Freedom vs. Possessiveness
The heart chakra is governed by the Air element (Vayu). Consider the nature of air: it must circulate freely. If you lock fresh air inside a sealed room, the air becomes stale and suffocating.
The moment human beings attempt to freeze love into a permanent, rigid contract, demanding ownership and control over another, the relationship suffocates. You cannot own another human soul. Genuine heart-centered love offers total space, honoring the other person’s individual freedom and dignity.
The Blockage: Doubt
The primary blockage of the heart is chronic doubt and lack of trust. When you doubt yourself, your gifts, and your worth, it becomes impossible to extend authentic trust to others or to life itself.
The Master Medicine: Gratitude
The ultimate healing key for Anahata is radiant gratitude.
Imagine walking through a pitch-black room. Your foot brushes against something long and curved, and you leap back in terror, convinced it is a venomous snake. You shake with fear. Then, you turn on a flashlight. In the beam of light, you see clearly: it was only an old piece of rope. Instantly, your fear vanishes, and you laugh.
Gratitude is that flashlight. The moment you illuminate your life with grateful awareness for your breath, your body, and your existence, the illusions of fear and unworthiness disappear. When you awaken the heart through genuine gratitude, its healing grace flows downward, restoring balance to your power, your pleasure, and your foundation.
The Living Mantra: Just Say YES
To conclude this foundational exploration, there is a simple, potent mantra that bypasses the intellectual mind and speaks straight to the energetic heart:
“Just say yes to life.
Just say yes to love.
Just say yes to laughter.
To the blessings of the Masters, just say yes.”
By saying a wholehearted YES to your existence, you release resistance, dissolve fear and guilt, and open your heart to the path of yoga.
