Solar Plexus Chakra: Healing Powers of the Manipura Chakra

Solar Plexus Chakra

By Sadhana Om | Co Founder and Creative Director, Yoga New Vision

The solar plexus chakra, known as Manipura in Sanskrit, is the third energy center in the body. Located in the upper abdomen about four finger widths above the navel, it governs personal power, willpower, self esteem, and digestive fire. When it is balanced, you feel clear, decisive, and at home in yourself. When it is blocked, life starts to feel like a constant performance you never asked to be in.

What Is the Manipura Chakra?

Manipura comes from two Sanskrit roots. “Mani” means shining gem, and “Pura” means city or place, so the full translation is the “city of shining gems.” This name is not decorative. It points to the radiant, generative quality of a third chakra that is actually working.

The chakra is associated with the fire element, called Agni in Sanskrit. The key pranic wind here is samana vayu, the equalizing life force that regulates digestion, metabolism, and your capacity to fully absorb and assimilate both food and experience.

Its symbolic form is a bright yellow lotus with ten petals and a downward pointing red triangle at the center. The ten petals represent ten vital forces in the body. The inverted triangle represents fire condensed into transformation. The bija mantra, or seed sound, is RAM, pronounced “Rahm.”

What the Solar Plexus Chakra Actually Controls

Manipura governs self esteem, decision making, willpower, and the physical digestive system including the stomach, liver, pancreas, and adrenal glands. It sits directly at the coeliac plexus, a major nerve network that innervates most of the digestive organs.

This is the anatomical reason you physically feel stress in your gut. The enteric nervous system keeps the gut and the brain in constant dialogue through the vagus nerve. Modern research confirms what yogic science has said for centuries: unprocessed emotion lives in the body, and the solar plexus is its most common address.

When Manipura is healthy, you feel motivated without being manic, confident without needing applause, and decisive without being rigid.

Signs Your Solar Plexus Chakra Is Blocked or Imbalanced

A deficient Manipura shows up in consistent, recognizable ways:

  1. Chronic low self esteem and second guessing every choice
  2. Fatigue that rest does not fix
  3. People pleasing and inability to hold a boundary
  4. Digestive issues like bloating, IBS, or sluggish metabolism
  5. Feeling directionless or unable to follow through
  6. Seeking validation from others before trusting your own instincts

An overactive Manipura looks different. It shows up as perfectionism, rigid control, anger, egotism, or relentless overworking that you call ambition.

Here is what most content on this topic gets wrong: both patterns can exist at once. In my discovery calls with incoming YTT students every month, the most common profile I meet is someone who has been high functioning and visibly successful on the outside while feeling completely disconnected from themselves on the inside. That is not a strong solar plexus. That is a dissociated one.

The Contrarian Truth: A Strong Core Can Block Your Solar Plexus

The fitness and wellness industry tells you to build your core to activate your inner fire. The logic sounds right on the surface.

But here is what Deep Kumar and I have observed across thousands of students at Yoga New Vision: chronic abdominal tension traps samana vayu rather than activating it. The psoas major muscle meets the diaphragm directly at the solar plexus region. When the psoas is chronically tight from stress, forced posture, or years of sucking your stomach in, the diaphragm cannot descend. The fire has nowhere to breathe.

True Manipura energy is not rigid or clenched. It is relaxed, responsive, and grounded. Energetic power and physical bracing are not the same thing.

What Six Years in a Boardroom Taught Me About the Third Chakra

I spent six years in the corporate world before yoga found me. I was organised, I delivered results, and from the outside I looked like someone with a very healthy solar plexus. I had ambition. I had direction. I had all the markers.

What I actually had was a deeply overcompensated Manipura. Top down authority, perfectionism, and the constant pressure to prove my value are not signs of personal power. They are signs of a third chakra that has been working overtime to compensate for a foundational sense of unworthiness. When I finally began studying with revered Yoga Gurus in India and was initiated by my master, the shift was not about becoming stronger. It was about becoming real.

After six years of leading YTT trainings alongside Deep Kumar, I see this pattern repeat itself in students from every industry and country. The question is never “how do I get more willpower.” It is always “what am I still performing that is not actually me.”

How to Heal and Balance the Solar Plexus Chakra

Meditation with Agni Mudra

Sit comfortably and form Agni Mudra by folding your ring finger to the base of your palm and pressing your thumb gently on top. Close your eyes and bring slow, diaphragmatic breaths into the belly. Visualize warm golden yellow light at your navel expanding naturally with each inhale. Five to ten minutes of this daily is enough to begin building conscious awareness of this center.

Chant the RAM Bija Mantra

RAM is the seed sound of Manipura. The “R” activates digestive and thermal energy, and the nasal “M” circulates that fire through the subtle body. It connects to the presiding deity Vishnu, the cosmic sustainer, and the goddess Lakini, who represents vitality and nourishment. Chant it aloud or silently while holding Agni Mudra for ten repetitions.

Pranayama for the Fire Center

Kapalabhati, or Skull Shining Breath, uses short forceful exhales to clear stagnation and energize the solar plexus. Bhastrika, or Bellows Breath, uses both forceful inhales and exhales to build rapid heat and vitality. Agnisar Kriya, the abdominal pumping technique practiced on an empty stomach, is the most direct physical method for stimulating samana vayu. Learn all three with a teacher before practicing independently.

Yoga Poses That Stimulate Manipura Energy

Navasana (Boat Pose): Sustained core engagement builds agni consciously. Focus your awareness at the navel point throughout the hold.

Dhanurasana (Bow Pose): This opens the solar plexus toward the sky and massages the digestive organs with each breath.

Ardha Matsyendrasana (Half Spinal Twist): Wrings out the liver and gallbladder and brings the mental clarity that comes with a clear gut.

Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation): The full sequence builds heat, honours solar energy, and conditions the navel center. Morning practice is ideal.

Uddiyana Bandha (Abdominal Lock): After a full exhale, draw the abdomen inward and upward and hold briefly. This is the most direct activation of samana vayu in the yoga toolkit.

The Bhakti Yoga Path to Manipura Healing

Most chakra content frames solar plexus healing as a project of building more force, more discipline, more output. My entire experience as a Bhakti Yoga teacher points in a different direction.

Bhakti, the path of devotion, heals the Manipura by releasing the ego’s need to control outcomes. When you offer your actions to something greater than your personal ambitions, the solar plexus stops burning in overdrive. Tapas, or yogic discipline, is not self punishment. It is simplification. You remove what is not essential so the real fire has space to function.

When the third chakra heals through devotion, people do not become louder or more assertive. They become quieter, clearer, and far less easy to destabilise.

Supporting the Manipura with Crystals, Sound, and Food

Citrine transmutes negative energy and supports confident action. Tiger’s eye builds grounded courage. Yellow jasper offers emotional stability during transitions. Amber clears stored negative energy. Place any of these on the solar plexus during meditation.

The vibrational frequency associated with Manipura is 384 Hz. Meditating with a singing bowl or music tuned to this frequency can deepen the practice.

Warm, fire activating foods support this center: turmeric, ginger, cumin, cinnamon, and whole grains like oats and rice. Yellow foods such as banana, pineapple, corn, and lemon carry the color frequency of the chakra and support digestion.

Work with the Manipura at Yoga New Vision, Bali

At our 22-day 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training in Bali, chakra healing is not a module. It is a living thread woven through asana, pranayama, philosophy, and meditation across the full training.

Every student I speak to before arrival comes in carrying some version of the same question: “Why does success feel so hollow?” The answer is almost always in the Manipura. Our next training runs July 6 to 27, 2026 at Omham Retreat, Ubud, Bali.

I take a personal discovery call with every incoming student. Come as you are.

10 Frequently Asked Questions About the Solar Plexus Chakra

  1. What is the solar plexus chakra and where is it located?

The solar plexus chakra, or Manipura, is the third energy center in the body. It sits in the upper abdomen about four finger widths above the navel. It governs personal power, willpower, self esteem, and digestion. When balanced, you feel clear and motivated. When blocked, you feel exhausted, directionless, or stuck seeking approval.

  1. What does Manipura mean in Sanskrit?

Manipura translates to “city of shining gems.” “Mani” means gem and “Pura” means city or place. The name reflects the radiant, transformative quality of a well functioning third chakra. In classical yoga, this energy center is understood as the seat of inner fire, personal authority, and the capacity to act from genuine clarity.

  1. What are the signs of a blocked solar plexus chakra?

Signs include chronic low self esteem, exhaustion that sleep does not fix, people pleasing, digestive disorders, difficulty making decisions, and feeling powerless or directionless. An overactive imbalance looks different: it shows as perfectionism, anger, controlling behavior, and relentless overworking. Both states benefit from consistent yoga, pranayama, and meditation practice.

  1. What is the RAM bija mantra and how does it work?

RAM (pronounced “Rahm”) is the seed sound of the Manipura chakra. The “R” sound activates digestive and thermal energy in the body. The nasal “M” circulates that fire through the subtle channels. Chanting RAM while holding Agni Mudra and focusing on the navel center strengthens willpower and activates the third chakra’s transformative fire.

  1. Can a tight psoas muscle block the solar plexus chakra?

Yes. The psoas major meets the diaphragm directly at the solar plexus region. Chronic tightness in the psoas from stress, poor posture, or habitual abdominal bracing prevents the diaphragm from descending fully. This physically compresses the energy center and traps samana vayu. Releasing the psoas through somatic yoga is one of the most effective physical approaches to Manipura healing.

  1. Why does anxiety cause stomach pain, from a yogic perspective?

The coeliac plexus, the anatomical location of the solar plexus chakra, innervates most digestive organs. Stress activates the nervous system and creates tension in this nerve center, directly disrupting digestion and metabolism. Yogic science calls this trapped samana vayu. Practices like Kapalabhati, Agnisar Kriya, and slow diaphragmatic breathing directly regulate this pattern through the enteric nervous system.

  1. What yoga poses best activate the solar plexus chakra?

Navasana (Boat Pose), Dhanurasana (Bow Pose), Ardha Matsyendrasana (Half Spinal Twist), and Surya Namaskar are the strongest asana practices for Manipura activation. Uddiyana Bandha and Agnisar Kriya are the most direct techniques for stimulating samana vayu. Practice all of these with awareness at the navel point to build conscious connection with the energy center.

  1. How does Bhakti yoga heal the solar plexus chakra?

Bhakti yoga heals the Manipura by releasing the ego’s grip through devotion rather than force. Offering actions to something greater than personal ambition naturally discharges the overcompensated fire that drives perfectionism and burnout. This approach builds authentic inner power. Tapas, or discipline, becomes simplification rather than punishment, and the solar plexus activates from a place of genuine clarity.

  1. What crystals and essential oils support Manipura healing?

Citrine, tiger’s eye, yellow jasper, and amber are the primary crystals. Place them on the solar plexus during meditation or wear them during practice. For aromatherapy, warming spice oils like ginger, cinnamon, and clove activate digestive fire. Citrus oils like lemon and grapefruit bring clarity and brightness. Frankincense bridges the fire element with deeper spiritual focus and intention.

  1. How long does it take to heal a blocked solar plexus chakra?

Most people notice shifts in energy, clarity, and confidence within two to four weeks of consistent daily practice. Deeper patterns rooted in long term trauma or chronic stress may take several months of dedicated work. The process is not linear. One genuine moment of reconnecting to your own authority can shift things more than months of mechanical practice ever will.
